Car Detailing vs. Car Wash: What's Actually the Difference?
A car wash cleans the surface; a detail restores and protects the whole vehicle. Here's what each one does, what it costs, and when you need which.

Key Takeaways
- A car wash removes surface dirt in minutes; a detail cleans, restores and protects the whole vehicle, inside and out.
- Automatic washes with brushes are the most common cause of swirl marks in paint.
- Detailing reaches what washes miss: door jambs, seams, carpets, vents, leather and bonded contamination on the paint.
- Regular touchless washes between full details are the best of both worlds.
“Wash” and “detail” get used interchangeably, but they're very different jobs. A wash is a quick surface clean. A detail is a top-to-bottom reset that cleans, restores and protects every part of the vehicle. Knowing the difference helps you spend money on the right one.
What a car wash does
A wash removes loose dirt, dust and road grime from the outside of the vehicle. It's fast and inexpensive, and doing it regularly is genuinely good for your paint, especially through a salty Kingston winter.
The catch is how it's washed. Automatic washes with spinning brushes drag grit across the paint and are the number one cause of the fine circular scratches called swirl marks. Touchless washes are much safer because nothing physically scrubs the paint, though they won't remove bonded contamination.
What a detail does
A detail goes far beyond the surface. On the outside, that means a safe hand wash, cleaning door jambs and wheels properly and, in deeper packages, a clay bar to pull out contamination a wash leaves behind, plus polish and protection. On the inside, it means vacuuming, wiping every surface, shampooing carpets and mats and, in our deeper packages, hot-water extraction, steam cleaning and leather care.
- Door jambs, seams and crevices — skipped by every wash.
- Carpets and upholstery — shampooed and extracted, not just vacuumed.
- Bonded contamination — clay bar treatment leaves paint glass-smooth.
- Protection — wax in our Diamond package, a 1-year ceramic coating in The Works.
- Problem areas — add-ons like headlight restoration, pet hair removal and odour treatments.
What they cost
A wash costs a few dollars to a few tens of dollars. Our detailing packages start at $149 for Gold and go up to $599 for The Works, depending on how deep the interior and exterior work goes. See exactly what's in each one in our package breakdown.
When a wash is enough
- Between full details, to keep salt and grime from building up.
- On a vehicle with a ceramic coating, where dirt rinses off easily.
- When the interior is still in good shape.
When you need a detail
- After winter, to clear salt from carpets, jambs and lower panels.
- When the paint feels rough or water no longer beads.
- Before selling a vehicle, or after buying a used one.
- When there are stains, odours or pet hair a vacuum won't fix.
- Every 3–6 months as routine care — see how often to detail your car.
The middle ground: a maintenance plan
If you want the vehicle kept clean without booking a full detail every time, our Maintenance Membership covers one visit a month: a touchless exterior wash that's safe for PPF, wraps and ceramic coatings, wheels and tires, an interior vacuum with mats, a wipe-down and interior glass. It starts at $99.99/month.
Not sure which your vehicle needs? Book a detail or ask us — we'll tell you honestly if a wash would do.
